The Roots of Tradition

“A Story of Passion and Resilience. Every drop of our balsamic encapsulates centuries of experience and tradition.”

Everything began with Guido Mussini, born around 1885. We know that in the very early years of the 20th century he married Cesira Braglia, building a large family with ten children, just as was common among farming families at the foot of the Apennines.

Guido and Cesira worked hard on their small plot of land, cultivating grapes and producing wine, living a simple yet deeply fulfilling life.

According to oral tradition, passed down from generation to generation, the first barrels for aging vinegar were purchased at the beginning of 1909. For several decades, Guido and Cesira refined their production techniques, initially supplying vinegar only to relatives and later extending this precious tradition to friends, thus spreading their passion for balsamic vinegar.

The serenity of this image conceals the economic hardships and devastation caused by the First World War and by the rise of the fascist dictatorship in the 1920s.

Many years passed before the family managed to increase production once again—an achievement that only took place after the Second World War. Toward the end of the conflict, the family home near Magreta was partially destroyed by an Allied bombing. But Guido and Cesira, with incredible foresight, had hidden the barrels underground, thus saving their precious family heritage from destruction and fascist confiscation.

During the reconstruction, the attic of the house was expanded to accommodate a greater number of barrels. Guido and Cesira decided to increase production capacity by acquiring new ones. By combining production expansion with accumulated experience and access to exceptionally fine grape musts grown on their own land, the circle of enthusiasts of Mussini balsamic vinegar continued to grow, serving an entire community and transforming itself into a profitable activity.

Despite the success and growing appreciation, all the children chose different life and career paths. As often happened in the post-war period, this led to a gradual fragmentation of the family assets. The barrels—the family’s true treasure—were divided among the children once they married.

This difficult “exodus” lasted through much of the second half of the 20th century, until Gabriele and Giorgio, after working for other companies, reunited in the 1990s and began recovering as many intact barrels as possible from Guido and Cesira’s heritage.

At that point, Gabriele and Giorgio founded the company Mussini, giving rise to a second rebirth of the family tradition that had begun almost a century earlier.

“The Acetaia represents not only a family story, but a symbol of passion, resilience, and dedication. A tradition that continues to live and thrive through innovation, carrying the name Mussini and its excellence in balsamic vinegar to the entire world.”

Tales of the Secchia River: Grandma Cesira

“Sit down here, my dear ones, and let me tell you a story that goes back many centuries, a story that flows like the Secchia River, carrying with it the memory of our ancestors.

Once upon a time, in a small community near the Secchia River, there lived an elderly woman known for her extraordinary skills in vinegar making. That woman was me, your Nonna Cesira. My wisdom and generosity had earned me the respect and admiration of everyone.

You see, the secret of the goodness of my vinegar did not lie only in my craftsmanship, but also in an ancient tradition handed down by our ancestors.

One day, while I was on the banks of the Secchia River collecting fresh water, I saw a mysterious light shining among the waters. Driven by curiosity, I approached and found a particularly luminous and smooth stone, which seemed to emanate a special energy.

Convinced that this stone was a gift from nature itself, I decided to take it with me and place it on one of my vinegar barrels.

From that day on, I noticed that the vinegar seemed to have an even richer quality and a more intense flavor.

News of the miraculous stone spread quickly. From then on, every vinegar producer along the Secchia River placed a stone collected from the river on the barrels. It is said that this gesture brings good fortune and preserves the purity and quality of the vinegar.

This legend has become an integral part of our culture and tradition. It symbolizes the deep connection between humankind and nature, and respect for ancient artisanal practices that pass down knowledge and love for one’s craft.

Remember, my dear ones, that every bottle of vinegar we produce contains not only the flavor of our land, but also the magic of that luminous stone and the passion infused into every gesture.”
